December? You're so lucky. At our last house, our neighbours began the Christmas decoration of the outside of the house in mid October. By the end of November, the house needed additional structural support to carry the weight of all the tasteful lights they used. By Christmas, we'd forgotten what sleep was, as they placed the brightest, flashiest concoctions just outside our bedroom window.
They eventually took them down just after Valentine's Day, and in just 8 short months it all began again ....

Regarding your comment (1) about 36 people cycling non-stop and hooked up to the grid, thought you might like this:

The only people round here who put their own lights up are in their 80's and it's a cause of local concern as to how they are going to fare this year. Mostly because they end up shouting and generally harrassing each other!!! (I don't bother with the lights myself, going for a tasteful wreath on the door, and a Santa wot looks like he's diving down a chimney in the front garden!)

The wrinklies who live in this retirement park (sorry, 55+ community park) tend to have as much time on their gnarled hands as funds under their beds and so the Christmas decorations here have already started to be seen from the ISS.

I love it because as we all know, if anyone attempted to put up so much as a single lit Christmas bulb on most estates in England, some hoodie, yobbo or similar 'yoot' would have it away before you could say "oi, come back here with my single lit Christmas bulb, you thieving welfare scumbag"

I love your Christmas story (point number 3) because it so perfectly captures what's been going on in American Christmas decorations in the last few years. I swear, 20 years ago we all just had lights.

My parents tell me stories that when I was a child, and before I was born (so say the 1960s and 70s), the local power company in Denver would sponsor Christmas light display contests in the city, with the winner getting some nominal amount (say $1,000). I suspect it only partially covered the winner's electric bill, and anybody who didn't win was on the hook for a whole lot more.

To the best of my knowledge the power company in Denver doesn't do it any more.

You've said it all.

It's the best Christmas present the electricity company could wish for.
