One of your most amusing and well written posts to date. The bit where you grabbed some crisps for the ride home all the while disdainful of the their existence in a hospital is skit worthy.

Very nice writing. I hope your friend is well now. When he's out, give him a glass of sherry & a bacon sandwich & he'll be just fine. Have fun... Vikka

There's a gift shop in the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London. They also have paintings for sale displayed on the walls of the corridors and sometimes they have stalls that sell things like pashminas or perfume.
Hammersmith Hospital in London also has a gift shop but it sells second hand books and slightly scary home knitted animals that wear dungarees (that's 'overalls' to all you US readers).
Ah you see Chelsea is a Royal borough but Hammersmith is not . . . . .shows in the quality of the hospital shopping facilities!

Your pal needs a better health insurance plan - shared rooms!
And yes, my mother-in-law volunteers in her local children's hospital gift shop and I had never really thought of it as strange. Brilliant if you're visiting someone and haven't had time to buy a little something.
